Colon Scores in 6-1 Loss as Wilson's Nine Saves Showcase NAU's Grit

By Rev. Justin C. Jackson

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, the North American University (NAU) women's soccer team faced a tough challenge as they squared off against a formidable Texas A&M University-San Antonio squad. Despite falling to a 6-1 defeat, NAU showed flashes of resilience, with Genevieve Colon providing a standout moment by scoring the team's only goal. With 27 spectators cheering from the stands, NAU fought hard but ultimately couldn't match the relentless offensive pressure from their opponents.

First Half: A Promising Start

The game began with NAU on the defensive as Texas A&M-San Antonio came out strong, pressing hard from the opening whistle. After a quick strike from Texas A&M's Jasmin Dominguez at 10:45, NAU showed great character in their response. Just six minutes later, Genevieve Colon seized an opportunity, finding the back of the net with a brilliant solo effort at 17:00, tying the game at 1-1. Colon's goal, unassisted and perfectly timed, lifted the spirits of the team and their supporters.

For much of the first half, NAU worked hard to keep Texas A&M at bay. The defense, led by players like Andrea Davila and Lyric Andrews, made crucial stops, while goalkeeper Ava Wilson was solid between the posts. However, just before halftime, Texas A&M's Ana Barragan broke through at 40:47, giving her team a 2-1 lead heading into the break.

Second Half: Fighting Until the End

The second half proved to be a difficult period for NAU as Texas A&M-San Antonio ramped up their attacking pressure. Despite NAU's best efforts, Ana Barragan continued her stellar performance, scoring two quick goals at 55:18 and 57:07 to complete her hat trick. As NAU struggled to find their footing, Texas A&M added two more goals in the final 10 minutes—Samara Lopez at 80:13 and Kenia Bustos at 80:51—securing a comprehensive win for the visitors.

NAU's Standout Performances

Even in defeat, there were bright spots for NAU. Genevieve Colon, who scored NAU's only goal, once again showed her knack for capitalizing on chances, proving to be a key player in the team's attack. Her early goal kept NAU in the game for much of the first half and gave the team a fighting chance.

Goalkeeper Ava Wilson was another standout. Facing a barrage of shots, Wilson made an impressive 9 saves, doing her best to keep Texas A&M's offense at bay. While the scoreline reflected a tough day for the team, Wilson's efforts in goal were commendable and prevented an even larger deficit.

Tactical Challenges

NAU struggled to maintain possession and create sustained offensive pressure against a well-organized Texas A&M team. With no substitutes available, the physical toll of the match weighed heavily on the NAU players, especially as the game wore on. Despite their best efforts, NAU's defense couldn't hold off Texas A&M's sharp passing and dynamic movement, which led to several breakdowns in the second half.

Coach [Name] acknowledged the challenges the team faced but praised their commitment. "We knew this would be a tough match, but I'm proud of how we battled. There are lessons to take from this game, and I'm confident we'll grow stronger as a team."

Moving Forward

Although the 6-1 scoreline was disappointing, NAU's performance showed glimpses of their potential. Genevieve Colon's goal and Ava Wilson's outstanding effort in goal were signs of the team's grit and determination. With time to regroup, NAU will look to build on these positives as they prepare for their next match.

Despite the loss, the team continues to hold their heads high, ready to take on the challenges ahead with the support of their loyal fans.
