NAU Battles Back: Acosta's Last-Minute Heroics Earn 3-3 Draw Against Paul Quinn College

By Rev. Justin C. Jackson

Dallas, TX – September 19, 2024
In the heart of Texas, where the stakes are high and passion runs deep, North American University's Lady Stallions showed a blend of grit, skill, and an unbreakable will. Facing off against Paul Quinn College, the match ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw, but the story line goes far beyond just numbers. This was about resilience, leadership, and, above all, the standout play of Maria Alejandra Acosta, who carried her team in the clutch and delivered when it mattered most.

A Clash of Determination
Under the guidance of Head Coach Dane Smith, the Lady Stallions have faced their fair share of challenges this season. Injuries and the 12-class day roster cuts put the team's depth to the test, but this squad is proving they're not just here to compete, they're here to thrive.

It didn't take long for the intensity to ramp up. Just 4 minutes and 19 seconds into the first half, Sky Hernandez struck with a solo effort, putting NAU on the board and firing up her teammates. But Paul Quinn responded almost immediately. Asrael Basden, a one-woman wrecking crew, leveled the score at 1-1 just a minute later. Then, at 26:24, Basden found the back of the net again off an assist from Ashley Rosete, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

But NAU wasn't backing down. With 31:58 on the clock, Suzette Baltazar sent a flawless corner kick into the box, finding Acosta, who headed it in with confidence, tying the game at 2-2 going into halftime.

Second-Half Drama
The second half saw an NAU offensive onslaught, as the Lady Stallions outshot Paul Quinn 26-5 overall. Despite their dominance, Paul Quinn's goalkeeper Fernanda Rosas played the game of her life, racking up 10 saves.

In the 70th minute, Paul Quinn's Simara Barton took advantage of a defensive lapse and fired home an unassisted goal, putting the Tigers ahead 3-2. But if this season has taught us anything about NAU, it's that this team refuses to quit.

As the clock wound down, the Lady Stallions pressed harder. In the 87th minute, with time running out and their hopes hanging by a thread, Acosta stepped up once again. Like a seasoned veteran, she found herself in the right place at the right time, delivering an unassisted strike to tie the game 3-3. It was a moment of pure leadership, and her celebration said it all, this team has fight.

Coach's Perspective
After the match, Coach Dane Smith praised his squad's resilience: "We've been hit hard this season, but the way these players respond makes me proud. They've shown heart in the face of adversity, and Maria's performance was the epitome of leadership today. When the pressure's on, she delivers."

As the Sports Information Director and E-Gaming Coach, I see leadership come in many forms. What Maria did today? That's leadership in action. Her ability to keep calm and execute under pressure is something every player and every coach can appreciate.

Stat Breakdown

Despite the 3-3 draw, NAU dominated statistically, out shooting Paul Quinn 26-5 and winning eight corner kicks compared to Paul Quinn's zero. However, Rosas' 10 saves kept the Tigers in the fight.

Looking Ahead
Coach Smith's squad continues to show that they're more than just a team, they're a force to be reckoned with. The road ahead may be tough, but with leaders like Acosta and Hernandez stepping up, the Lady Stallions are poised to turn these hard-fought draws into decisive victories. As we march forward, this team is gearing up to make a lasting mark on the season.

One thing's for sure, don't count out the Lady Stallions. This journey is just getting started!
