HOBBS, N.M. — October 1, 2026 — The Lady Stallions came to Hobbs looking for a win, built a two-goal cushion, and then had to hold on for dear life.
North American University women's soccer defeated the University of the Southwest 3-2 Thursday afternoon, improving to 1-2 on the season while Southwest fell to 0-7.
The Lady Stallions controlled the opening half, took advantage of their opportunities and survived a furious Southwest finish to bring the victory back to Stafford.
DURAN GETS IT STARTED
North American established control early, firing 11 shots in the opening half compared to just three from Southwest.
The pressure finally paid off in the 36th minute.
At 35:29, Citlaili Duran found the back of the net on an unassisted goal, giving the Lady Stallions a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
North American finished the opening period with five shots on goal, while Southwest managed only one.
SOUTHWEST ANSWERS — COLON ANSWERS BACK
Southwest wasted little time tying the match after halftime.
Just 27 seconds into the second half, Kaylynn Miller scored off an assist from Maureen Camacho to make it 1-1.
But the Lady Stallions didn't stay tied for long.
At 50:22, Genevieve Colon put North American back in front with an unassisted goal.
Then Colon struck again.
With just over eight minutes remaining, Colon scored her second goal of the afternoon at 81:37, pushing the North American advantage to 3-1.
Two goals.
One big response.
And suddenly the Lady Stallions were nine minutes away from victory.
LATE DRAMA IN HOBBS
Southwest refused to go quietly.
With just 2:02 remaining, Eliza Lopez scored an unassisted goal to cut the North American lead to 3-2.
The final minutes became a defensive stand.
North American goalkeeper Arely Sarabia finished with one save, while the Lady Stallions' defense protected the lead and kept Southwest from finding the equalizer.
Final whistle.
North American 3. Southwest 2.
COLON LEADS THE ATTACK
Colon was the difference-maker for North American, finishing with:
- 2 goals
- 8 shots
- 3 shots on goal
Duran added the opening goal, while Leandra Sherifi also recorded a shot on target.
As a team, North American finished with 14 shots and six shots on goal, controlling the shot battle 14-7.
The Lady Stallions also held the advantage in the opening half, where they outshot Southwest 11-3.

North American built the lead. Southwest answered.
The Lady Stallions answered again.
And when Southwest made one final push, North American held the line.
