NAU Lady Stallions Make Championship Debut, Battle to Golden Goal Finish
Written by Rev. Justin C. Jackson

The North American University Lady Stallions Soccer team stepped into the spotlight for the first time, making their debut in the USCAA Championship Tournament. Facing Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse, the match showcased the grit and determination of a program on the rise. Although the final score tipped 3-2 in favor of the opposition, the Lady Stallions left everything on the pitch, with the game decided by a golden goal in overtime.

Game Recap

The battle at AHN Montour Stadium in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, started as a defensive masterclass, with both teams locked at 0-0 through the first half. Goalkeeper Ava Wilson was a wall for the Stallions, registering eight saves in the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Stallions struck first. Maria Alejan Acosta delivered a brilliant finish in the 48th minute off an assist from the ever-reliable Suzette Baltazar. However, the lead was short-lived, as Bryant & Stratton capitalized on a penalty kick less than two minutes later.

As the clock wound down, the intensity ramped up. Bryant & Stratton grabbed two goals in quick succession to go up 3-1, but the Stallions answered with grit. In the 88th minute, Alejandra Leal connected with a perfect corner kick from Baltazar, cutting the deficit to one. The late surge sent the game into overtime.

Under golden goal rules, both teams fought valiantly in extra time, but Bryant & Stratton's standout player, Masego Nfandiso, sealed the match with a strike from 20 yards out.

Key Performers

  • Maria Alejan Acosta: Led the attack with three shots on goal and one crucial score.
  • Suzette Baltazar: Played a pivotal role, setting up both NAU goals with pinpoint precision.
  • Ava Wilson: The backbone of the defense with 12 spectacular saves.

For Bryant & Stratton, Nfandiso was the difference-maker, netting two goals, including the game-winner.

Coach's Perspective

Head Coach Dane Smith shared his pride in the team's performance:
"Being here is a win in itself for this program. Our players gave it their all and showed they belong on this stage. It's a tough result, but this experience will only make us stronger."

A Program on the Rise

The Lady Stallions may have come up short on the scoreboard, but their debut in the USCAA Championships marks the beginning of something special. This was not just a game—it was a statement. With a young and talented roster, the future of North American University women's soccer is brighter than ever.

Get those hooves up, Stallions! This is just the beginning!
