Stallions Edge Wildcats in a Nail-Biter: Tevin Gowens Hits Game-Winner

Written by Rev. Justin C. Jackson

Stafford, TX – In a thrilling Saturday afternoon matchup, the North American University Stallions (4-4, 1-3) emerged victorious over the Louisiana Christian Wildcats (2-5, 1-3) with a razor-thin 70-69 win at The Stable.

The game had all the drama of a blockbuster finale, culminating in a clutch game-winning shot from Stallions guard Tevin Gowens, whose ice-cold composure in the final moments sealed the deal for NAU.

First Half: A Balanced Attack

The Stallions came out with energy and precision, shooting 51.2% from the field and an impressive 44.4% from beyond the arc. Caleb Malik set the tone early, carving through the Wildcats' defense to notch 17 points for the game, with 7-of-11 shooting and two key free throws. Gowens' efficient 4-of-4 shooting, including a three-pointer, kept the Stallions' momentum alive, while Joseph Cormier chipped in with 14 points and a flawless 4-for-4 at the charity stripe.

The Wildcats didn't make it easy, with Omarion Layssard leading the charge with 11 points and a strong presence in the paint. NAU held a slim 37-34 lead at halftime, as both teams traded buckets and defensive stops.

Second Half: Heart-Pounding Moments

The second half saw Louisiana Christian surge back behind Bryce Weinmunson (10 points) and Corey Lombard, who was a rebounding machine with 7 boards. With under two minutes to go, the Wildcats clawed their way to a 69-68 lead, threatening to spoil the Stallions' home court heroics.

Cue the drama.

With the clock winding down, Tevin Gowens found himself with the ball and a chance to etch his name into Stallion lore. Showing poise beyond his years, Gowens sank the game-winning jumper, sending the packed Stafford MSN Gym into an uproar. The Wildcats' final attempt to answer fell short, and the Stallions held on for the one-point victory.

Between the Lines: Breaking Down the Numbers

In a game as close as this, the stats often tell the story of the battle within the battle. Here's what stood out:

  • Shooting Efficiency: The Stallions shot an impressive 51.2% from the field compared to the Wildcats' 48.1%, a slim margin but critical in a one-point game.
  • Free Throws Matter: NAU capitalized on their opportunities at the stripe, hitting 22-of-29 (75.9%), while Louisiana Christian went 13-of-16 (81.3%). Oakley Lewis led the charge for the Stallions, going 7-of-10 from the line.
  • Turnover Battle: NAU forced 17 turnovers, scoring key points off those mistakes, while committing only 10 themselves.
  • Bench Contributions: The Stallions' reserves outscored the Wildcats' bench 25-20, with Oakley Lewis and Jamarric Hammond combining for 19 points off the pine.
  • Defensive Presence: Erric Wynn anchored the defense with 3 steals, while Desmond Green's 4 rebounds and a block provided much-needed grit inside.

These small advantages added up to a big win, proving once again that every possession matters.
