Stafford, Texas - September 23, 2024
In a game filled with explosive plays and tense moments, the North American University JV squad kicked off their season with a thrilling 27-20 victory over Louisiana Christian Community College. And while the action on the field was intense, the varsity players watching from the stands had their chests puffed out in pride, knowing their JV counterparts were representing North American with the same grit and determination.
The tone was set early by North American, with quarterback Juan Huerta wasting no time launching a 47-yard touchdown bomb to Pernell Williams just 2 minutes into the first quarter. Moments later, Huerta struck again, this time connecting with Isaac Torres for a 26-yard score, putting NAU up 14-0 in a flash. It was a dream start for the Stallions, as they turned every yard into a statement, showing Louisiana Christian Community College that they weren't here to play it safe.
However, Louisiana Christian responded, cutting into the lead with a 14-yard rushing touchdown by Greg Emery, though a failed two-point conversion kept the gap at 14-6. Just before the first quarter ended, quarterback Zaylan Ford threw a 17-yard strike to Dwayne Dales, followed by a successful two-point conversion to tie the game at 14 apiece.
In the second quarter, North American regained control with Huerta finding Curtis Franklin for a 20-yard touchdown pass, putting the Stallions ahead 21-14 at halftime. Defensively, the Stallions buckled down, refusing to let Louisiana Christian find the end zone in the third quarter. The highlight of the quarter came when Michael Blayloc scooped up a fumble and raced 53 yards for a defensive touchdown, sending the varsity players in the crowd to their feet, celebrating with gusto. Although the extra point was missed, the Stallions extended their lead to 27-14.
The fourth quarter brought some drama when Louisiana Christian's Ford connected with Jamal Sulivan on a 30-yard touchdown pass to bring the score to 27-20. But the Stallions' defense held firm when it mattered most, preventing any further damage and securing their first victory of the season.
Although the Stallions' offense was outgained (383 total yards for Louisiana Christian to 225 for NAU), timely plays and a resilient defense were the difference-makers. North American only managed 9 first downs compared to Louisiana Christian's 23, but big plays in key moments proved to be the deciding factor.
Standout Performances:
- Juan Huerta led the Stallions' air attack, going 4-of-10 for 108 yards and 3 touchdowns.
- Pernell Williams was electric with 3 catches for 103 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown that set the tone early.
- On defense, Michael Blayloc's 53-yard fumble return for a touchdown was a game-changer, while Richard Crawford and Collin Wilson anchored the defense with crucial tackles and sacks.
While the JV players celebrated their hard-fought victory, the varsity members watching from the stands soaked in the moment, feeling a sense of pride that their teammates were carrying the banner of North American University with style and substance. As the season progresses, this camaraderie between the JV and varsity teams could be a key factor in both squads' success.
The Stallions are off and running, and this first win was just the beginning.
