Stallions Rally Past Wiley in Physical Showdown

Landaverde sparks second-half surge as Stallions outpace Wiley on the road

Stallions Rally Past Wiley in Physical Showdown

Written By Rev. Justin C. Jackson

The men's soccer team of North American University went into Marshall, Texas, and showed exactly why their versatility and pace make them one of the most exciting squads to watch in the NAIA. Against a Wiley team that has finally found its identity and embraced a swing-style offense, the Stallions had to withstand a first half full of hard tackles, quick rotations, and fast counters.

The first 45 minutes were scoreless, but not without drama. Wiley looked determined to use their playmakers in open space, testing NAU's ability to hold shape. Meanwhile, the Stallions relied on disciplined wing backs to stretch the field, covering those 120-yard lanes with relentless energy. Credit to the referees, who let both sides battle physically while keeping the match safe and under control.

The breakthrough came after halftime. In the 53rd minute, Eric Landaverde pounced on a ball in Wiley's third and calmly slotted it home for the opener. That moment broke the deadlock and gave the Stallions confidence. Just four minutes later, Landaverde turned provider, sliding a perfect pass to Sandile Mdauli, who smashed it into the net for a 2-0 lead.

Wiley refused to back down. Their intensity rose, and after several near-misses, Stephen Gaskin pulled one back in the 80th minute, cutting the margin to 2-1. The closing 10 minutes were tense, with Wiley throwing numbers forward and trying to force overtime.

But goalkeeper Sofiene Hammami stood tall, commanding his box and coming up with three critical saves. NAU's defense bent but never broke, closing out the win with resilience and focus.

Final Score: North American 2, Wiley 1.

The Stallions improve to 1-1-0 on the season, showing both grit and explosiveness in a hostile road environment.

Coach's View – Tommy Jennings

"What stood out about this match was not just the goals, but the discipline and adaptability of NAU. When Wiley tried to drag them into a back-and-forth street fight, the Stallions didn't panic. They absorbed the pressure, switched gears when needed, and turned defense into offense in a matter of moments.

The sequence that produced the two goals was textbook: patience, then precision. It shows that this team is not one-dimensional—they can beat you with pace, with physicality, or with controlled buildup. That's the mark of a squad with a deep playbook and players who trust the system."

The road win over Wiley is more than just a tally in the standings—it's a sign of the Stallions finding their rhythm. With their versatility and stamina, this group has all the tools to turn close matches into statement victories.
