A Night of Big Plays and Hard Fights as NAU Battles Through Adversity at Stafford Stadium

By Rev. Justin C. Jackson, Sports Information Director

STAFFORD, TX – Under the Friday night lights at Stafford Stadium, North American University faced off against Nelson College (TX) in a tough conference showdown. Despite a valiant defensive effort and the unyielding heart of the Stallions, it was Nelson who rode off with a commanding 36-3 victory, showcasing offensive firepower and defensive might. Let's dive into the action that had fans on the edge of their seats, with big plays, strategic calls, and the indomitable spirit of competition on full display.

First Quarter: Early Momentum for Nelson

With the opening kickoff, Nelson College's offense wasted no time asserting itself. Dakeevion Rose – their standout running back – plowed through the Stallions' defensive line on a 10-yard dash to the end zone, breaking two tackles along the way. Though the extra point kick failed, Nelson was up 6-0, setting an early tone with grit and determination. The Stallions' defense buckled down on subsequent drives, with linebacker/safty Jaheim Evans leading the charge, but it was clear Nelson had come to play.

Second Quarter: Nelson Extends the Lead

The second quarter saw Nelson's offensive versatility on full display. Quarterback Briley Green led an efficient drive, hitting receivers across the field, while Rose added an 11-yard rushing touchdown, breaking through NAU's defensive efforts and evading tacklers with swift, agile cuts. The successful PAT extended Nelson's lead to 13-0. Just a few minutes later, a pivotal defensive play saw Nelson's defense swarm NAU's offense, leading to a safety and stretching the score to 15-0.

With time running out in the half, Nelson wasn't done. A quick strike from Green and a punishing ground game led to Marvin Sanders' 5-yard rushing touchdown just before the half. Nelson entered the locker room with a commanding 22-0 lead, while the Stallions' fans rallied, cheering for a second-half comeback.

Third Quarter: Defensive Breakdowns & Key Turnovers

The Stallions started the second half with hope, but it was Nelson's defense that seized control. Early in the quarter, a fumble by NAU was scooped up by Johnathan Bloom, who sprinted 43 yards for a touchdown, sending the Nelson sideline and fans into a frenzy. This pivotal turnover swung momentum further in Nelson's favor, increasing the score to 29-0.

Just as the Stallions looked to regain their footing, Nelson struck again. Defensive back Amin White, with an eagle eye for the ball, intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown, further solidifying Nelson's lead at 36-0. The third quarter saw Nelson's defense play some of its most aggressive and opportunistic football, forcing three turnovers and holding the Stallions to a mere 21 rushing yards.

Fourth Quarter: Stallions Fight to the Finish

With the game winding down and Nelson holding a commanding lead, NAU's offense rallied one last time. Quarterback Jesper Korkalanien guided the Stallions down the field, setting up Cristobal Salgado for a 17-yard field goal attempt. Salgado delivered, nailing the field goal and putting the Stallions on the board with just under two minutes remaining. Though it was just three points, it demonstrated the resilience of this NAU team, refusing to be shut out despite a challenging night.

Jahiem Evans and Decarlos Johnson: Senior Leaders Stepping Up Big for NAU Defense

When the Stallions took the field against Nelson College, two names kept rising above the noise – Jahiem Evans and DeCarlos Johnson, two defensive anchors and senior leaders who led the charge and showcased why they're more than just collegiate athletes; they're potential Sunday players.

Jaheim Evans, named Defensive Player of the Game, was a true powerhouse on the gridiron. Evans played relentlessly, reading Nelson's offense like a seasoned pro and making tackles that sent a message across the field. Whether he was bringing down their star running back or pressuring the quarterback, his leadership on defense was undeniable. His standout performance marked him as a key disruptor, bringing an energy and game awareness that had Nelson's offense searching for answers.

Then there's Decarlos Johnson, who, like Evans, is known for his sheer will to lead and lift his team when it matters most.  Decarlos didn't just show up to play; he showed up to inspire. His on-field commands, his quick reactions, and his ability to keep his unit focused were the bedrock of NAU's defensive strategies. He plays with the kind of intelligence and swagger that coaches dream of, and he's not afraid to challenge his teammates to elevate their performance.

These two senior captains are part of a select group of five defensive players on the Stallions' roster with both the heart and skills that could translate seamlessly to the NFL. They're known for playing with that rare combination of grit and polish, a blend that's already caught the eye of scouts and coaches alike. And when the clock ticks down, their competitive drive doesn't wane – it strengthens. Coach Apande has been vocal about how their passion and talent ripple through the locker room, setting the standard for what it means to be a Stallion and showing the younger players how championship heart is cultivated.

Coach's Corner

Coach Kenneth Apande commended his team's resilience, stating, "We're working with heart, and we're building every week. These young men face challenges head-on, and though tonight didn't go our way, I'm proud of their determination." Coach Apande remains focused on team development, rallying his players around the values that make a true Stallion.

Looking Ahead

The Stallions continue their journey next week with renewed focus and determination. They will travel to OPSU this weekend to try to disrupt the great season OPSU is having.  With each game, this young NAU team gains valuable experience and battles to make the North American community proud. Fans, stay tuned – these Stallions have grit, heart, and a promise to keep striving for victory.
