Celebrating 713 Day: Honoring Houston's Legacy at North American University
By Rev. Justin C. Jackson, Sports Information Director, North American University
July 13 may seem like an ordinary day to the rest of the world, but for Houstonians, it holds special significance as "713 Day." This day marks the celebration of Houston's original area code, established in 1947 and exclusively used until 1996. Named for Houston's first telephone area code, July 13 has become an unofficial day for celebrating every facet of the Bayou City's distinctive culture.
Created in 1947, 713 is Houston's original telephone area code and one of the first four area codes in Texas, according to the Public Utility Commission of Texas. The city's other area codes (281, 832, and 346) came into existence later, with the first two starting in the '90s and 346 starting in 2014. The number 713 signifies new beginnings, creativity, expansion, joy, optimism, open-mindedness, happiness, creating reality using the power of positivity, motivation, ambition, communication, leadership, determination, intuition, inner wisdom, and spirituality.
At North American University, the spirit of Houston runs deep within our veins. Our connection to this vibrant city is more than just geographic; it's a bond of shared values and aspirations. Houston, with its rich tapestry of cultures, its unwavering resilience in the face of challenges, and its boundless energy, is a source of inspiration for our entire university community.
Houston's influence permeates every corner of our campus. Many of our students hail from the Houston area, bringing with them the diversity, creativity, and dynamism that define this great city. These students enrich our university with their unique perspectives and experiences, embodying the very essence of what it means to be a Houstonian. Their presence is a testament to the city's commitment to education, innovation, and progress.
Our faculty and staff, too, draw inspiration from Houston's spirit. The city's dedication to growth and excellence fuels our own commitment to providing an environment that promotes global cultural competency, personal growth, and responsible citizenship. We strive to mirror Houston's values in our academic programs, community initiatives, and campus life, ensuring that our students are not only prepared for their careers but also equipped to make meaningful contributions to society.
As we celebrate 713 Day, we also recognize the significant role Houston plays in shaping the future of North American University. The city's support and engagement are crucial to our success, and we are immensely grateful for the strong relationship we share. Houston's businesses, organizations, and leaders continually collaborate with us, offering invaluable opportunities for our students to learn, grow, and thrive.
As the fall semester sports season approaches, we invite our community to come out and support the Stallions of North American University. Our athletic teams embody the same drive and determination that Houston is known for, and we are excited to showcase their talent and dedication on the field, court, and track. Check out our athletic schedules at Stallions.ns.edu.
So, as we celebrate this special day, let us remember the importance of community, the power of perseverance, and the joy of shared success. Happy 713 Day, Houston! Thank you for being an integral part of the North American University family.
