Missouri City, Texas – The North American University (NAU) Stallions opened their 2024 soccer season in style, securing a commanding 3-1 victory over Arlington Baptist University in an electrifying match on August 17. Under the floodlights at Missouri City, the Stallions showcased their prowess, leaving no doubt that they are a force to be reckoned with this season.
First Half Highlights:
The Stallions wasted no time asserting their dominance. At the 10:49 mark, Eric Landaverde delivered the opening salvo, finding the back of the net with a powerful strike. Assisted by the sharp vision and precision of Pedro Ortega, Landaverde's goal was a testament to NAU's offensive cohesion and set the tone for the match. From that moment on, NAU controlled the pace, applying relentless pressure on Arlington Baptist's defense.
Despite Arlington Baptist's attempts to counter, NAU's defense held firm, with goalkeeper Tian Capilla confidently guarding the posts in the first half. Arlington Baptist managed only a single shot on goal, a testament to the Stallions' defensive organization and tactical awareness.
Second Half Action:
As the second half commenced, the Stallions continued to demonstrate their superiority. At 55:38, Jorge Torrecillas doubled NAU's lead with a well-placed shot, capitalizing on an assist from Alejandro Perez. This goal was the result of meticulous build-up play, with the Stallions methodically breaking down Arlington Baptist's defense. Torrecillas' composure in front of goal highlighted his ability to perform under pressure, a key asset for NAU moving forward.
The Stallions weren't content with a two-goal cushion. In the 80th minute, Thiago Cunha added a third goal to the tally, sealing the victory for NAU. Ethan Murray, who provided the assist, showcased his quick thinking and sharp passing. The goal was a direct result of Coach Smith's instructions, as his voice guided the team through every pass leading up to Cunha's clinical finish. This moment epitomized the disciplined execution that NAU is known for, a reflection of their commitment to excellence both on and off the field.
Arlington Baptist's Response:
Though Arlington Baptist University managed to pull one back late in the game, with Ismael Calderon scoring at the 88:02 mark off assists from Blake Borrego and Ruben Gutierrez, it was little more than a consolation.
