North American University Women's Basketball took a punch from a motivated conference opponent Thursday night, falling 79–63 to Texas A&M–San Antonio at the Stafford MSN Gym. While the scoreboard showed a setback, the message across the Red River Athletic Conference remains clear: beating the Stallions still means something.
Texas A&M–San Antonio jumped out early, using a strong first-half push to take control, but NAU continued to battle through all four quarters, matching the Jaguars point-for-point in the final frame.
Savannah Velazquez led the Stallions with 12 points, six rebounds, and five assists, filling the stat sheet and setting the tone on both ends. Ja'naa Johnson added 10 points, while Akyra Hodges brought energy off the bench with 10 points and seven rebounds. Aliyah Solis chipped in eight points, continuing to provide valuable minutes and leadership in the rotation.
Despite the loss, North American finished with 21 assists and 19 steals, a sign of the defensive pressure and ball movement that continues to define this group.
Make no mistake—this isn't a team slipping into the shadows. This is a USCAA National Champion program, and every night out, opponents are treating games against NAU like a measuring stick. With the RRAC standings still wide open, every result is shaping what promises to be a tightly contested race for the top spot.
The Stallions don't need to prove who they are.
They just need to keep stacking possessions—and letting the league chase.
