Finish What You Start: A Mandela Day Message to the Stallion Family

Written By Rev. Justin C. Jackson, Sports Information Director

On July 18, North American University joins the global community in honoring a man whose life embodied the spirit of resilience, justice, and transformation—Nelson Mandela. More than just a historical figure, Mandela is a living symbol of what it means to persevere with purpose, lead with humility, and rise for something greater than oneself.

At NAU, we believe that greatness is not just inherited—it's earned. And no one modeled that better than the late South African President and Nobel Peace Prize winner, who spent 27 years in prison and still emerged with a heart for unity and progress.

As we reflect on Mandela's legacy, we are reminded of his timeless words:
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

Whether you're a freshman adjusting to college life, a senior preparing for graduation, a faculty member shaping future leaders, or a student-athlete pushing for excellence in the classroom and on the field—this message is for you. Education isn't just about books and exams. It's about character. It's about developing the tools to change your family, your community, and your future.

Mandela also reminded us of the power of community.
"There can be no greater gift than that of giving one's time and energy to help others without expecting anything in return."

Here at North American University, our Stallion spirit doesn't stop at the sidelines. We are a family—united in purpose, fueled by determination, and driven by our shared belief in excellence. Whether in academics, service, music, or athletics—every contribution matters. Your time, your energy, your support—it's what builds a legacy.

And perhaps most importantly, Mandela was a champion of finishing what you start.
"It always seems impossible until it's done."

Our students—especially our student-athletes—know what that means. To grind through morning workouts. To fight through adversity. To carry the burden of being an example on and off the field. To stare down the odds—and finish the race strong. Just like Mandela.

As we celebrate Mandela Day, we look ahead to a new season filled with promise and purpose.
